Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup – Using Leftover Ham
For those of you who are looking for ideas of what to do with leftover ham & the bone part of the ham if you buy bone-in ham, here’s an easy crockpot ham and bean soup recipe you could try, to make full use of all the leftovers! Great for Easter, Christmas or anytime you have leftover ham to use!
Whenever we find ham at significant discounts (such as around the holidays), we try to get our money’s worth out of it. We slice it all up & use our Foodsaver to put bags into the freezer. We also then make a slow cooker soup to take full advantage of the meat on the ham bone to make sure we are not wasting any of that delicious ham.
Ingredients for this Ham and Bean Soup Recipe:
- 1 ham bone with some meat left on it
- 3-6 potatoes, cubed (we love potatoes so I often add more)
- 1 can of italian style diced tomatoes
- 1 can of regular diced tomatoes
- 1 can of black or kidney beans
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 tbsp dried chives
- 1 tbsp garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 2 bay leaves
- 3 cubes of chicken bouillon
- 4 cups of water
- 1/2 tsp red pepper (if you like a little more spice)
- Chopped carrots (add these to taste)
- Chopped celery (add these to taste)
How to Make Ham and Bean Soup in the Slow Cooker:
Put the ham bone into the slow cooker first.
Pour all the ingredients on top of the ham bone (except the bouillon cubes).
Dissolve the bouillon cubes into water then pour into the slow cooker.
Cook on low for 6-8 hours.
Remove the ham bone out of the slow cooker (your ham will probably be falling off the bone). Discard the actual bones, gristle, & skin.
Cut or shred the meat and place back in the slow cooker. Then, you’re ready to serve up & eat!

If you don’t have a slow cooker yet, here are two that we recommend:
Crockpot 7 Quart Stainless Steel Manual Slow Cooker – this is a good basic crockpot which is a nice, big size for big meals like this Taco Bean soup. This is similar to the Crock-pot I used to have and it worked well for our family of 4.
Crockpot 6 Quart Programmable Cook & Carry Slow Cooker – This is a crockpot that we just got this summer and I am loving that not only is it programmable & you can set the exact time you want it to cook. But it is also a cook & carry slow cooker, which means that it is easy to bring to gatherings with the clamps on the lid, so that it won’t make a mess in your car- this is a great bonus for me & when we get together with other families for meals.
