This is late notice, but I just learned details about this and wanted to share with all of you – at participating Walmart stores tomorrow, Saturday December 8th, they will be having a Fill the Truck event with the Salvation Army to collect donations of unwrapped, NEW toys and coats for boys and girls. They will be accepting the donations from 9 am – 5pm. This is not happening at every Walmart, so it looks like the only way to determine for sure is to call your Walmart to find out. There will be 2500 Walmart locations nationwide, though, which will have volunteers from the Salvation Army on hand to accept donations. {I do know for sure that the Walmart in South Hill (across from the mall) will have a truck on hand to accept donations tomorrow and the Walmart location closer to the Sunrise area of Puyallup will also be accepting donations for Fill a Truck.
Did you know that the money that the Salvation Army collects during the month of December with their bell ringing, as well as this Fill a Truck campaign to provide new toys & coats to needy families helps out local families in the community. I didn’t realize before last year that all of the money they collect is given back to the local community for those who are in need. They have said that 81% of Salvation Army programs this year saw an increase in need among families due to the recession, which is why they have stepped in to have this Fill a Truck campaign to help provide for the needs of those in the community.
We had the opportunity last year to volunteer to be bell ringers with the Salvation Army with our Sunday School and this year we will be helping out with the Bell Ringing as well as helping to take donations for the Fill a Truck event at Walmart. They are always in need of volunteers to help out with these types of events, so if you would like to have your family volunteer, just call your local Salvation Army office to find out if they need volunteers. If they don’t get enough volunteers, then they have to pay for people to work the shifts, so even more money will stay in the community if they have enough volunteers. In our area, they need groups to fill the whole day, so our Sunday School got together and each family is taking a shift for an hour to volunteer – that way the whole day is covered. It’s a great opportunity for an organization or group you may belong to, to get involved together & help make a difference in the community. Our kids were 3 and 5 last year and they had a blast and it was very meaningful for them to see people giving money to help others.
