Easy Pumpkin Pie Playdough Recipe
Here is a fun after school or weekend activity to make with the kids this fall. Make this DIY Pumpkin Spice Playdough. It does not take long to make, and if you cook things like pumpkin pies you probably already have all the ingredients you will need in your cupboards. The best part is that it makes your kitchen smell great!
We have often made the uncooked version of homemade playdough, and I will say that my kids like the texture of this cooked version much better. It really is not any harder to make in my opinion either (just a few minutes stirring on the stove, and we make it in a saucepan verses a bowl). It does seem to give that smoother texture like you get when you buy playdough. The spices in this recipe will give a bit of a peppered look to it, but it goes perfect with the pumpkin spice theme.
This recipe is awesome for pumpkin spice fans, but you can omit the pumpkin spices and add any food coloring you want for a basic playdough recipe too.
Ingredients Needed for Pumpkin Spice Playdough:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
- 2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice (you can also use 1 tbs of cinnamon, and 1 tbs of nutmeg instead)
- Orange food coloring (or combine red & yellow food coloring)
How to Make the Pumpkin Playdough:
Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan, and then mix well.
The kids wanted to make this batch so I had them combine all of the ingredients in a sauce pan off the oven, and then we moved it to the oven and I took over from there.
Stir ingredients together and add food coloring until you get your desired look you want. We used red and yellow coloring (in equal amounts) in the recipe here. Because of the pumpkin spice in it it will have a light brown color too it prior to even adding color.
Stir regularly over medium-low heat. Keep stirring until the mixture reaches a thicker consistency.
It will start to clump up, but just keep stirring until its the consistency of dough.
Remove it from the heat and let it cool. Once it’s cooled off a bit, knead it together. {This is a great step for the kids to help}.
We put down some wax paper on our table just to make it easier for them, but it should not be sticky at this point, so that was really just precautionary.
My kids loved playing with this recipe. They said that it smelled amazing, and they really liked the consistency of this pumpkin playdough recipe. It was one of their favorites.
