DIY Homemade Grout Cleaner
Making your own grout cleaner is very easy to do, and not only can you feel good about using natural products to do so, instead of buying the more toxic ones from the store, but it just takes a few ingredients and a couple minutes of your time to make it.
This DIY Homemade Grout Cleaner recipe uses just 2 ingredients, in addition to several essential oils: castille soap and baking soda. Castille soap comes in a variety of scents, so you can customize the overall scent more to your liking or you can go with the unscented. My favorite is the almond scent. It is sweet and light and blends well with the oils. {There are a number of different options for Castile soap – we have used Dr Bronner’s Castile soap the most, personally}
You will be adding in Tea Tree essential oil, lemon essential oil and lavender oil. These essential oils are good ones to use in this cleaning recipe as they are anti-bacterial and great cleansers.
DIY Homemade Grout Cleaner
Items Needed:
A small glass jar with lid, about a 12 oz. size at the largest
½ cup baking soda
3 tbsp. castile soap
10 drops tea tree essential oil
5 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
Whisk, scraper and mixing bowl if desired
Directions:
Measure out the baking soda first, and then add in your essential oils and castile soap.
With these particular oils, they could come out fast, so be careful as you count out your drops.
Now, whisk all ingredients well, making sure to get down into the corners of the jar. The soda likes to stay dry there, so this is where you would use the scraper if needed.
Keep whisking until the paste is frothy and lighter. The castile soap makes it do that and if you feel it needs a bit more, just squirt a little more on top and mix again.
You are now all set to clean!
Note:
This paste does harden over a short time, so the reason for making a small amount is just that. If you make up too much and then don’t use it up, it will harden and you’ll have to toss it out anyway. I make just one recipe worth at a time and typically that’s about all my back can handle of scrubbing at once anyway. Then the next time I scrub, I make another batch.
I also just mix mine right into the jar. If you have a small whisk and scraper it makes for one less dirty dish.
To use:
Using a scrub brush or toothbrush, apply the paste right on to the grout and let it set a couple of minutes to soak in some. Then, using the brush again, scrub along the grout back and forth to clean.
Now, wet your brush and go back for a second scrub. The mixture will foam up and spread out a little more when wet, and you will see the dirt coming out a lot.
Next, just use a wet rag to wipe and rinse and then dry if desired.
