6 Healthy Make Ahead Breakfast Ideas To Grab & Go!
Perfect for Back to School Breakfast Ideas Too
Looking for some inspiration healthy make ahead breakfast ideas for busy mornings? We share some of our favorite grab and go breakfast ideas, making them the perfect back to school breakfast ideas too. They also work perfect as grab and go breakfast options for on your way to work, or just if you do not want to work too hard in the mornings.
As the school year starts up again, I always get in the start organizing my day better. I’m not sure exactly why, but for some reason I like to spend the first few weeks of September doing some meal prep so mornings are not so hectic at my house. I want to make sure my kids get something healthy in them, to keep them fueled for the school day ahead. But mornings can be hectic, and that means I will need to do a little pre-planning to help our mornings run smoothly.
Easy go tos for foods you can freeze include pancakes, waffles and French toast for breakfast. We share lots of ideas beyond these standards that you can make ahead of time, so they are ready to grab on the way out the door. Time is of the essence on school day mornings, but that does not mean you have to sacrifice getting your kids and yourself a great breakfast.
Here are some of our favorite ideas for quick and easy school day breakfast meals, that you can either make ahead (and grab that morning) or throw together quickly in the morning.
Now, on to some of my favorite recipes…..
Freezer Smoothies:
A favorite breakfast item in our house are smoothies. Both the adults and kids love these and they are great for mornings that we need to eat in the car. I make a large batch of our favorite smoothie recipe then freeze in cups with lids (I use the disposable ones you can get that come with the straw. Freezer safe mason jars are another good choice. You could also buy these drink pouch and straw sets that would be perfect for freezing smoothies in for on the go).
Be sure when you freeze the smoothies that you leave about 1-2 inches room at the top because they expand when frozen. I take these out first thing in the morning to thaw. They are usually ready to eat in about an hour after taking them out of the freezer. For a quick thaw, you can set them in the sink for a cool water bath.
Favorite Smoothie Recipes You Can Try For Your Mornings:
Here are some smoothie recipes we love to make.
- Apple Pie Smoothies – these are fun for fall, and includes oats in it, so a bit heartier.
- Tropical Green Smoothies – this is a great option with immunity boosting benefits.
- Berry Pineapple Smoothies – this is one kids often love, as it has all the sweet berries in it.
- Mango Kiwi Avocado Smoothies – super way to get some avocado into the kids in the morning with no complaining.
- Chia Seed Berry Banana Smoothies – the chia seeds keep this one filling and healthy.
Mini Quiche & Egg Bites:
I have also recently rediscovered quiche and egg bites, as I have tried to start eating healthier. I have always loved quiche and am aquiring a new love for the egg bites (they are so simple to make and a great quick way to get some protien). Make them ahead in muffin tins then freeze them to grab and warm up quickly in the microwave in the morning. They are super easy to make and provide a hearty breakfast option for busy mornings. Plus the muffin size is perfect for kids for breakfast (I will pop down a few of these myself).
Here are a couple of recipe ideas I love to use that are both flavorful, and easy to adapt to your families taste preferences.
This recipe will give you lots of ideas on what to add in, but honestly – many days I keep it simple. I will add some bacon bits, cheese, salt and pepper and if I have any veggies on hand like onions and peppers. You could add anything you want really.
Tips & Notes:
- Make Ahead Tip: Individually wrap in plastic and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month. To reheat, remove plastic, wrap in a paper towel and microwave on High for 30 to 60 seconds.
- A good-quality nonstick muffin tin works best for this recipe. If you don’t have one, line a regular muffin tin with foil baking cups.
Baked Oatmeal & Overnight Oats:
We love baked oatmeal. It sticks to your ribs and would be perfect for those longer days when they have sports or other activities after school or on a testing week. It is so versatile too- you can top it with berries or seasonal fruit or milk and sugar. My favorite topping is with brown sugar and cinnamon.
In addition to baked oatmeal, overnight oats are ideal for busy school mornings. You can grab these overnight oat containers, prep the night before, and then you are ready to grab and go in the morning.
Even fussy kids will love this smores overnight oats recipe. You can skip the marshmellows on top to keep it healthier too.
Overnight Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal Recipe
If you love old fashion oatmeal, this is the make ahead recipe you will want to get ready for mornings on the go.
Yogurt & Granola Breakfast Ideas
Yogurt and granola are the perfect standy by quick and easy breakfast. Make sure to have some berries on hand and you can make your own granola to control what you put in it.
I love to get these yogurt parfait containers, and then I can put the yogurt in and the dry toppings in the top, to keep things really easy in the morning. I generally have a bin of washed berries in my fridge, so the kids can grab a handful of those, add their dry toppings to the yogurt and they are eating in minutes.
A couple of recipe ideas include:
These are a fun spin on the traditional parfait cups. Make your granola cups ahead of time, and then add a dollop of yogurt and toppings in the morning. This one is nice too because you make your own granola, so you can control what you want to put in it.
Yogurt & Berry Breakfast Parfaits
Here are some ideas for the more traditional parfait.
Freezer Friendly Breakfast Egg Muffin Sandwiches
These freezer friendly breakfast sandwiches are one of my go to meals for school days. You can use ground turkey or chicken instead of sausage or ham if you prefer. I make a batch of these, wrap them well and freeze them. Then in the morning I will pop them in the microwave for about a minute, and add some berries on the side, and breakfast is served!
Buttermilk Waffles
I wanted to share one final favorite recipe with you – my recipe for Buttermilk Waffles. These waffles are great to make ahead as they freeze really well & are easy to reheat quickly. You can add fruit to top them with instead of syrup, to make them a healthier option for your family too. Or maybe some natural peanut butter and a little local honey. But they are super convenient to have in the freezer, and so make a great option too.
Tips for Easy Make Ahead Breakfasts –
Additional Breakfast Ideas that freeze & reheat well!
- Pancakes
- French toast
- Fruit Bowls
- Banana bread (made in mini loaves)
- Muffins
- Protien bars
- Hard boiled eggs in the air fryer – throw these in your air fryer, set the timer and walk away. Once they are done cooking, you have a quick and easy breakfast
Flash Freezing tips for these breakfast foods:
The key to getting a good thawed product is flash freezing and using the proper freezing containers. Flash freezing is freezing the items separately on a cookie sheet for 10-20 minutes before placing together in a freezer bag. This technique helps the pancakes and waffles not to stick together in the freezer bag. Freezer bags work very well as long as you make sure to get all the air out first.
Homemade Options are more Frugal:
Not only are homemade breakfast items more healthy for your family, they can also be a great way to lower your spending on your grocery budget often too.
Breakfast is one of our favorite meals of the day and I am always looking for yummy breakfast recipes!! So, what are some of your tips for healthy, yummy breakfasts for crazy school days?
This is great. I always freeze pancakes every time I make them and just throw them in the toaster to re-heat. My son can do that himself if he needs to. I did not think of the mini quiches though. I will have to try that! Thanks for the great ideas.
Do you have a recipe for homemade pancakes?
Thanks!
